Long Term Care Policy and Practice

April 14 - April 15, 2016 

We are pleased to welcome Lewis A. Lipsitz, MD,as the keynote speaker for the 2016 Research Retreat.   Dr. Lipsitz currently serves as Vice President for Academic Medicine and Director of the Institute for Aging Research at Hebrew SeniorLife in Boston, MA, where he holds the Irving and Edyth S. Usen and Family Chair in Medical Research. He is also a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Chief of the Division of Gerontology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.  Dr. Lipsitz’s research interests include falls, fainting, blood pressure regulation, cognitive dysfunction, and improving chronic care for elderly people. He has published more than 250 original research papers, review articles, and textbook chapters, and co-edited “Quality Care in the Nursing Home”.  He completed a Health in Aging Policy Fellowship, and has since served as a Senior Advisor to the Medicare Medicaid Coordination Office at CMS on projects designed to improve the quality of care in nursing homes and prevent avoidable hospitalizations of their residents.

Dr. Lipsitz's keynote address "Improving the Quality of Long-Term Care in America: Two Experiments to Bring Geriatric Expertise to the Nursing Home", will be presented in the Eccles Genetics Building auditorium at 8am on Friday, April 15th.  A series of symposia and panel discussions presented by Center on Aging Faculty focused on long term care policies and practice will follow during the remainder of the morning.

Micah Drummond, PhD has been chosen as the recipient of the 2016 Vernon R. Young International Award for Amino Acid Research.  

New Member Spotlight

Sara Weisenbach, PhD is a clinical neuropsychologist studying the mechanisms and deficits underlying depression during late life in a developmental/longitudinal context and translating this knowledge into effective neuropsychological and neuroimaging tools to monitor course of illness. She has a Career Development Award through the VA Rehabilitation, Research, & Development Program that investigates reward, memory, executive functioning brain networks in older adults with depression, and how patterns in these networks might predict cognitive decline.  Dr. Weisenbach is also funded with a NARSAD Young Investigator Award through the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation for a project of epigenetic mechanisms of late life depression and cognitive decline.

Charles P. Hoy-Ellis, PhD comes to the University of Utah’s College of Social Work from the University of Washington, where he earned his MSW and PhD. His research explores the roles of sexual orientation and gender identity in the health and mental health of older adults. He brings with him a deep commitment to developing strong univer­sity/community partnerships that will advance social justice initiatives to enhance the health and well-being of LGBTQ older adults.
