Siciliano & Center on Aging Forum and Conference - Fall 2009

Mark your calendars for October 28 and 29, 2009, to attend the 2009 Siciliano and Center on Aging Forum and Conference, "Global Aging in the 21st Century: Challenges, Opportunities & Implications for the U.S." The forum will focus on three overarching themes related to global aging and the implications for the United States: healthy aging, opportunities and challenges associated with an aging workforce, and shifting intergenerational relations. These three themes are cross-cut by other dimensions that are intertwined with the dynamic process of aging; such as, immigration, contrasting policy regimes, and economic forces. The 7th Annual Rocky Mountain Geriatrics Conference

Join faculty members from the University of Utah, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and well-known national experts for, "Updates in Geriatrics: Across Disciplines and Distance" to be held near Salt Lake City from September 2-4, 2009. Discussions will provide a comprehensive overview of important updates on issues and recent developments in healthcare for the older population, and identify challenges in providing healthcare for rural older adults. New Dean for Social & Behavioral Sciences

M. David Rudd, PhD, is the new dean of the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences. He replaces Steve Ott, who will divide his time between teaching and academic research, as well as directing the Institute of Public and International Affairs and the Center for Public Policy and Administration. Dr. Rudd comes from Texas Tech University where he was professor and chair of the Department of Psychology. His research focuses on clinical suicidology, cognitive therapy, and ethics and regulatory issues in psychology. Dr. Rudd will be joining the Center on Aging Board of Directors.

Visiting Professor to Lecture on the Role of Aging and Exercise

Plan on attending the Geriatrics Research Update Conference as Micah J. Drummond, PhD, University of Texas Medical Branch, Sealy Center on Aging, presents "MicroRNAs in Human Skeletal Muscle: Role of Aging and Exercise," on Thursday, August 27, from 12:00 - 1:00 pm at HSEB, Room 3515B.

About our logo: The bristlecone pine tree (Pinus longaeva) the earth's oldest inhabitant with a life span of 4,000 years is found only in Utah and five other western states.
